Resumo
The duration of the design storm is an important parameter that modifies the hydrograph peak and total flow volume. The objective of this work was to evaluate the critical duration for the design storm of the UFSC basin using several return periods. We followed three steps for the determination of the design hydrograph: i) The Eckhardt (2005) baseflow filter was applied for the hydrograph separation; ii) the total runoff volume was calculated using the SCS method; and iii) the hydrograph shape was calculated according to Mockus (1957). The design hyetograph was determined with the Huff fourth quartile curve. The peak time was calculated with the simplex method for minimizing the error of the simulated and observed hydrograph peak. The critical duration for the design storm was found to be 80-110 min, which is higher than the estimated time of concentration of 30 min. The hydrograph peak was underestimated when we considered the time of concentration for calculating the design storm. The results confirm the importance to evaluate several storm durations when calculating the worst-case for the design hydrograph.
