Resumo
The Itajaí River basin is known for being frequently affected by floodsThe objective of this work was to analyze the flood typology of the Itajaí River basin. We considered the relationships between duration, volume and peak discharge of the maximum annual discharge events of 20 of its sub basins. The seasonality of maximum daily annual discharge and precipitation was also evaluated. The maximum precipitation events occur on average between November and February, while the maximum discharge events occur between October and March. Nevertheless, the variability of the timing was high, indicating a large heterogeneity. The difference in both periods emphasizes the importance of factors other than the annual maximum precipitation that may contribute to the floods. The relationship between peak discharge and volume varied according to the size of the sub basins. As the area increased the variation increased. The relationship between precipitation and peak discharge also varied according to the area, the same precipitation intensity causes a larger peak discharge in a smaller basin than in a larger basin. The average event duration was of 10 days, ranging from 4 to 27 days. In larger basins, a more homogeneous distribution of peak discharge was observed in relation to the duration of the events.
