Resumo

Terrain descriptor and Digital Elevation Models can be an important tool for mapping flood hazard in large areas with limited available data. Detailed census data in local and regional scales are another important aspect to be combined with flood hazard in order to understand the drivers of flood risk. Santa Catarina State-SC in Brazil has been affected by many large flood-related disasters. This work mapped the population distribution in flood prone areas in Santa Catarina State. We combined the Height Above the Nearest Drainage ? HAND with mapped historic inundation points provided by the Integration Ministry of Brazil to classify the terrain in three flood hazard categories. SEDAC and UN WPP-Adjusted Population Density were used to estimate the population exposed to flood hazard for the years of 2000 to 2020. About 15% of SC area was classified as medium to high flood hazard. We estimated that 45% of SC population will inhabit flood prone areas by 2020.
