Hydrologic and Hydraulic Modeling for Mapping Areas at Risk of Urban Flooding on the Basin of Rio Pomba (PAP014922)
The occurrence of urban flooding has been a common fact in many Brazilian cities. Most of these events happens due to the lack of urban planning and irregular occupation among river banks. The floods, not only cause trouble to local population, but also bring economic, material and social losses and increase the risk of transmission of waterborne diseases. The knowledge of the risk areas and the frequency that the flood events occur can be considered essential for the minimization of these troubles on urban areas. Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling techniques associated with information systems - SIG allow the simulation and identification of these risk areas and provide urban planning basis. Thus, this work aims to evaluate the magnitude of the flooding spot on Cataguases, basin of Rio Pomba, Zona da Mata (MG) for different values for maximum flows with different return periods in order to subsidize an urban planning for this area. The georeferenced database was created through ArcGIS and the hydraulic and hydrologic models were obtained with the software HEC-RAS. The results give parameters to evaluate the extension of Cataguases' risk urban areas for different return periods. It is hoped that this work can contribute and direct an appropriate urban planning and provide guidelines to water resource management so as to reduce material and human losses due to these recurring events.
