Resumo
Hafar Al-Batin is a Saudi Arabian city located in the Northeastern part of the kingdom. The city lies in the dry valley of the Wadi al-Batin, part of the larger valley of the long, now-dry river Wadi Al-Rummah, which leads inland toward Medina and formerly emptied into the Arabian Gulf. Hafar Al-Baten is located in area where three valleys are meet which makes the city under high risk of flood especially when intense rain occurs during short duration as in the case of arid and semi-arid regions. The yearly average rainfall intensity of Hafar Al-Baten is estimated to be 121.6 mm. In year 2010 an extreme flood occurred. During this extreme event, the intense and sudden rainfall caused flood water to flow from all valleys towards the city causing serious damage to public and private properties. In this study, HEC-RAS model is used to investigate and analyze flood occurrence on the city. The model output channel flood depths at the gauging station were 2.43m, 2.64m, 2.82m, 3.16m, 3.47m, and 4.75m for simulated 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 year design floods respectively. Flood hazard maps are also generated to identify areas with high risk.
