Resumo
Understanding the full economic value of ecosystems and biodiversity to those who benefit from them can encourage investment in their protection and enhancement. Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) provides ecosystem services conservation and income generation in rural areas, food security and sustainable development. These projects, coupled with good practices, can guarantee a site's water security. But, one of the main obstacles is the monitoring of these practices. A tool widely used to supply this type of demand is Remote Sensing. In this paper we evaluated the effects of PES on the water stress of vegetation in the River Basin. We performed the analysis of NDVI and NDWI indexes and also analyzed changes in soil cover and precipitation data. Our main finding was a significant increase of photosynthetically active vegetation and the amount of water available in the soil values after the introduction of PES in the river basin.
