Resumo
Due to the need to better operate the reservoirs to serve the population in semiarid region the objective of this research is to define the operating rule of an isolated reservoir through a coupled model of simulation and optimization. The methodology used was a simulation-optimization process applied in a period of 33 years. Genetic algorithm was applied to define the critical levels and the rationing factors. The study area was the Dourado reservoir (Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil). The best approach was the one that consider fixed values of critical levels for each season, wet and dry and one level to trigger the rationing factor, which increase of the volume-based reliability was 8%. However it was notice a low necessity need to save water to improve the system reliability, considering the low level of rationing factor or critical levels for all approaches.
