Resumo

Mangroves have a role in maintenance of marine biodiversity, prevent soil erosion and has great relevance in the economic activities of the traditional populations. The use of optical satellite imagery for monitoring and identification o/f natural vegetation shows the limitation of weathers condition. To avoid problems like clouds is increasing the use of SAR technology in orbital sensors. In this work we used RADAR imagery for discriminating mangroves of different classes of natural vegetation, as natural fields, and the anthropic land uses, as pasture and urban areas, in eastern Marajó Island - PA . We used ALOS PALSAR , HH and HV polarizations , sampled to 25 meters. We used 100 random points was generated for each class study ( mangrove , deforestation , natural fields , pasture , secondary vegetation , urban areas , and Other Area unobserved) . In this study, we used the follow statistical analyzes, to reach the objective: multivariate discriminant analysis , the Kruskal -Wallis test. The result of this work showed that it is possible to discriminate the mangrove from other classes of natural and anthropogenic land use present in eastern Marajó Island - PA. However , it was not possible to separate areas of natural field and pasture . Among analyzed two polarizations, the HV polarization showed the best result .
