Resumo

Water contaminationby metals has attracted attention due to its persistence in the environment, bioaccumulation and negative effects on human health. Metal sources arefertilizers, pesticides, solid wastes, acid mine drainage and industrial production processes. In addition, metals accumulatein sediment by precipitation and can be recirculated in water column. Monitoring metal concentrationin sediments can estimatepoint and diffusesources of contamination. Besides, evaluatingecological riskis crucial mainly for benthic organisms, and dependson bioavailability, mobility andtoxicity. In this context, the goal of thisresearch wasto investigateconcentrations of aluminium, lead, copper, chromium, iron and mercury in sedimentof different types of Water Resources Management Units (WRMU). Data were obtained from the Sediment Monitoring Program developed bythe Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, between 2010 and 2016. By statisticalanalysis of variance, the relationship between concentrations of metals in sediment and the forms of use and occupation were statistically relevant for aluminium, lead, chromium and iron. On the other hand, thetype ofWRMUdid not havesignificant influence on copper and mercury. The monitoring values were compared with those established bystandardsand values of chromium haveecological risk in agricultural, industrial and industrialWRMU. Mercury values wereconsideredas potential risk in industrial WRMU. Therefore, evaluation of the monitoring data allows the direction ofpublic policies to priority areas of handling of contamination by metals.
