Sedimentation processes occurring on waterways located in port areas refer to dredging services in order to maintain adequate navigability due to their important role in the socioeconomic development. In order to remove the sediment located in the bed load, mechanical and/or hydraulic dredges are used.Therefore, this paper aims to approach the main dredging equipments and their respective characteristics, as well as the different types of sedimentsand places of performancein which they will performbetter. Based on the information obtained, it is concluded that mechanical dredgers have a preference of application in areas of greater difficulty of access and in non-cohesive sediments with presence of silt, clay and gravel. On the other hand, hydraulic dredgers are better suited to large-scale projects where there is a need for continuous dredging, with high sediment productionand transport capacity,actingin the presence of rocks,incohesive and non-cohesive sediments.
