Resumo

Brazil has high position in the dimension stone international market, and the State of Espírito Santo is the main Brazilian producer. The processing of these rocks generates great amount of wastes, composed by a mixture of water, steel fragments,lime and other chemical compounds, such as phenolic resins. The storage of these materials was, for a long time, made without environmental protection measures, in contact with water and soil. These areas are environmental liabilities of the dimension stone industry and were not still incisively studied, what motivated the development of this work. This research aimed the monitoring of surficial water and groundwater around an abandoned deposit of dimension stone waste in the Cachoeiro de Itapemirim County, in the South of Espírito Santo State. The hydrogen potential (pH), electrical conductivity (CE), total dissolved solids (TDS), alkalinity, phenol and chloride were analyzed. The study showed that the site of waste disposal, at an urban-industrial area with sewage discharge without treatment, have the urban effluents as the main factor that contributes for altering the quality of the surficial and groundwater.
