Resumo
This paper aims to estimate the sediment yield in the Almas river basin, located in the Cerrado biome, Goiás State, Brazil. In order to predict the sediment yield and streamflow, the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model, linked to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) techniques were used. In this study, maps of land use and occupation, soil types, digital elevation model and observed data were used. The calibration period was from 1968 to 1994 for Jaraguá streamflow gauge. The calibration period was from 1974 to 1988 for Colonia dos Americanos streamflow gauge. The results showed that the observed and calculated flows were 13.01 m³/s and 2.82 m³/s, respectively. The calibration performance values were considered very good (R² = 0.90 and NS = 0.87), showing a good fit between the observed and estimated data. From the results obtained through performance evaluation of the application of the SWAT model it could be inferred that the empirical models can be applied in the other parts of Goiás State for basin management.
