Resumo

Madeira River is recognized by the high sediment transport,as presented in previous studies by Meade(1985), Filizola (1999)and Carvalho et al.(2005), which showed that the average sedimentload of the MadeiraRiver is equal to or greater than the load of the Amazonas at the confluence of the two rivers. This paper presents an evaluation of sediment discharge and grainsize data collected from Sediment Monitoring Programsupported by Santo Antônio Hydropower Dam. The data were analyzedin three different waysto developa sediment rating curve in Port Velho (RO): according to the river regime (high and low water levels),according to the rainy season (wet and dry season) and using all the data of the period. Also,the grain size variations of the bed material and the variations of the composition of the suspended material during the monitored period are presented.The analysis of the sedimentological data allowed to identify that maximum sediment concentration precedes the peak flowin several days and maximum sand transport occurs from 1 to 2 months after hydrological peak.
