Resumo

The area-capacity curve of a reservoir could change due to the silting process. In this paper are presented and compared the design area-capacity curve, the theoretical evaluation of the sediment inflow, and the updating of the area-capacity curve of the Foz do Areia Reservoir, in Iguaçu river, Brazil. The comparison of the two curves (design and updated) indicated a difference of 5.7% in the useful volume and 6.9% in the total volume of the reservoir. The methodology used for the theoretical evaluation of sediment inflow indicates that, in 40 years of operation, the volume filled by deposited sediment would represent a reduction of 0.68% of the useful volume, which is significantly lower than that obtained in the area-capacity curve updated in 2017.However, the differences between the design curve and the one updated in 2017 should consider the difference in methodology used, also influencing the results of the theoretical evaluation. Even if it is a bedside reservoir, the sedimentation process of the Foz do Areia reservoir is slow, and thecontrol sections installed in 2017 corroborate this conclusion, but still do not have enough data to determine the sediment distribution in the reservoir. In the case of Foz do Areia, the 10-year interval between the updating of the area-capacity curves required by Regulatory Agencies is very small, and this periodicity should be more flexible.
