Resumo
This paper aimed to estimate the sediment yield within Piancó River basin, located in a semiarid region of Paraíba state. Piancó River is the main contributor to two biggest reservoirs located in Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte states. The sediment yield was estimated using the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model, for the period from 2003 to 2011. In this paper, streamflow, rainfall, temperature, wind velocity and humidity data were used, as well as maps of soil types and land use, and digital elevation model. The SWAT model was calibrated with streamflow data from 2003 to 2011 (calibration) and from 2013 to 2014 (validation), then the sediment yield could be estimated. The calibration results for the discharge rate presented R² = 0.85 and NS = 0.82, while for the validation period, they showed R² = 0.36. It was shown a good adjustment between the observed and estimated data. The monthly average of the estimated sediment yield from 2003 to 2014 was 0.00051 ton/ha.month, whereas the results for the validation period presented a monthly average equal to 0.0001 ton/ha.month. According to the obtained results, the analyzed runoff-erosion model showed to be a promising tool which should help the water management within the basin.
