Resumo
The Madeira River is the second largest tributary of the Amazon River. Although the annual flow of the Madeira River corresponds to approximately 13% of the Amazon River, the Madeira River contributes about 50% of its solid discharge to the Atlantic Ocean. This paper aims to show the evolution of the flow areas of 14 cross sections of the Madeira River by comparing bathymetries that were performed periodically in the stretch of the Madeira River in which the Jirau Hydropower Plant is inserted. According to the results, the bed of the Madeira River practically did not change upstream until the section RJ05 (Tamborete), with the exception of the sections RJ06 (Pederneiras) and RJ07 (Abunã), where a little erosion was observed; in the stretch of thereservoir downstream the section S36, sedimentation is occurring with emphasis on the section SJ01, located 4.6 km from the dam; and downstream of Jirau Hydropower Plant the Madeira River degraded, except for the section RN10, where the bathymetry performed in 2017 indicates a reversal of this process, though
