Resumo

Among the various causes of degradation of water quality, sediments stands out as one of the most complex. However, there are few guide lines that relate quantity and quality of sediments, not only in Brazil, but in the word. And, when they exist, they establish water quality standards independent of water flows. In this way, the objective of this work is to propose the qualitative and quantitative monitoring of sediments in the management of water resources. This monitoring was done trough flow and suspended solids. To demonstrate the interaction between the variables were used TMDL curves. Since in Brazil there is no standard for suspended solids, the legislation of other countries was used. For the analysis to be comprehensive, the maximum and minimum standards were used. When considering the nonpermanent flow regime, the percentage of non-complicance with TMDL was almost 30% higher than in the permanent regime, for the minimum standard. We concluded that the adoption of unique water quality standards based on reference flow, most often mask the true influence of the pollutantes on the water bodies and that the lack of guidelines for sediment-related parameters impairs the monitoring of water quality.
