Resumo

The present work presents the results of a master's project whose objective was to investigate the surface watersand sediments of a limestonemining company in the municipality of Caçapava do Sul, RS, through physical-chemical analysis and geological study.Watersfrom streamsand wastewatersfrom the limestone mining processeswereanalyzed.These waters have alkaline character with values of pH above 7.0 and high values of alkalinity and hardness compatible with processes of carbonates dissolution.Some elements in the sediments of the same points of the waters were evaluated by X-ray fluorescence where the presence of cadmium was detected, but their contents are within those established by the environmental legislation.The amounts of aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium and silica are compatible with the minerals forming the rocks of the study area.
