Resumo

This article proposed a re-reading and reflection of the definition and use of some concepts related to natural disasters in the national and international scope. In a last step, a discussion about both situations was made. Definitions of concepts are presented to enrich this discussion. Based on the review, despite some inconsistencies, the international approach follows a line of thinking in the conceptualization. In other way, in Brazil, research areas do not present a homogenization of the concepts, applying them by a mistaken way. These conflicts of concepts can generate a "bad" use in all spheres and inhibit or worsen disaster risk management (DRM). From a holistic view, the reflections demonstrate that technical and academic area needs to align its concepts with foreign studies to solve the misunderstandings. However, the discussions cannot be extinguished, since the concepts are always in evolution and need to be reflected in future studies.
