Resumo
The 1941?s flood that occurred in the state of Rio Grande do Sul represents the largest event of the type already registered in the region. The incident affected approximately 70,000 families in several municipalities of the state, since there were no preventive measures for the occasion. Historical data indicate that the level of Lake Guaíba rose until reaching 4.80 meters (the usual level is 0.80 meter), which implied in the central region of Porto Alegre?s flood. The possible causes of this event point to the great amount of precipitation in the region, combined with strong winds towards the south. In order to better understand the event, the work seeks to analyze the influence of rainfall and quantify the impacts that result from the event. This analysis came from simulations of the hydrological model MGB-IPH. The application of the model also aimed at quantifying the first flow estimates for the period of time in question, establishing a preliminary study that will enable future deepening on the subject, such as a detailed analysis concerning to the action of the wind for the event. The study was completed by comparing the results of the simulation with the recorded historical reports and data.
