Resumo
On January 5, 2017, the Mascarada basin, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, was hit by an extreme hydrometeorological event. The intense rain triggered landslides in the area, as well as affecting several municipalities with flooding and water supply disruption. The understanding of the phenomenon is limited because in the affected region there are no official rain gauges. Thus, the objective of the work was to use remote sensing product GPM IMERG to characterize and to analyze the hydrometeorological event. In addition, the study also aimed to perform the statistical analysis of the precipitation estimates provided by the IMERG algorithm, comparing them with data collected by meteorological stations. The results show that, in a qualitative way, GPM IMERG product provide a good notion of the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of the rainfall that caused landslides in the Mascarada Basin. On the other hand, in quantitative terms the precipitation values are underestimated.
