Resumo

Abstract: The challenges faced by water distribution companies in Brazil are often similar, and the search for tangible alternatives to reduce operational costs while ensuring water supply remains a constant concern among concessionaires. In the municipality of Afogados da Ingazeira, in Pernambuco?s semi-arid region, the expanding urban area has a significant demand and a water supply system with varied hydraulic performance and operational complexities. As a viable tool for understanding system needs and limitations, the hydraulic modeling software WaterGEMS proves effective for advanced analyses and for proposing feasible, executable operational alternatives without requiring physical interventions. To that end, the first step was to model the water distribution network as close as possible to field conditions, incorporating its components and characteristics. This was based on data collected and jointly analyzed to verify network behavior, apply calibration tools, and manage scenarios for identifying general bottlenecks. Additionally, due to a lack of more consistent data and the limited application of calibration tools, parameters such as pressure and head loss showed elevated values. While some values, even above standards, aligned with field conditions, others may reflect uncertainties regarding pipe material and derivations. This reinforces the need for further tool application and on-site measurements to refine the model and better reflect real-world conditions.
