Resumo

Water systems are under unprecedented stress in the Anthropocene. A comprehensive understanding of the hydrological cycle, its interaction with the atmosphere, the cryosphere, the biosphere, and with all the dimensions of Social-Ecological Systems, is needed more than ever to address water-related problems and envision sustainable solutions. Understanding these problems and their corresponding management is spread over many actors and organizations at different levels. Likewise, knowledge concerning water resilience and security is often fragmented and separated into epistemological silos. To deal with this overarching challenge, the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) established a scientific decade (2023?2032) focused on Science for Solutions named HELPING - ?Hydrology Engaging Local People IN one Global world?. Within the HELPING decade, the Working Group on ?Co-Creating Water Knowledge? aims to increase awareness in the hydrological community of the value of multiple and diverse water knowledges for sustainable development in a changing world. In particular, with this perspective, we aim to i) clarify the underpinning concepts of co-creation concerning water knowledge; ii) provide key inputs for applying co-creation of water knowledge; iii) present relevant applications of co-creation of water knowledge to be marked as good practices; and iv) highlight possible research and practical challenges and corresponding strategies to overcome them. Our intention is to establish a vision for this emerging approach that integrates diverse knowledge sources in hydrological research and practice, and set a framework to be used during the decade in a flexible way so that we can consolidate from experience at the end.
