WG 2.7: Stepwise ecological restoration of watersheds
Resumo
This study investigates the state of the art of ecological flows in South America through a systematic review. The focus is on assessing legal frameworks, methodologies for determining ecological flows, and case studies across various South American countries. The systematic review evaluated legal regulations, practical applications, and other key factors in water resource management across South America. Examples from different countries were used to illustrate varying approaches and challenges in implementing ecological flows. The review reveals that several South American countries have developed regulatory frameworks to establish and maintain ecological flows. Significant progress has been made in conserving rivers and sustaining aquatic ecosystems, yet practical implementation faces challenges. These include insufficient precise scientific data, resistance from water users, and regional variations in policy implementation. Managing ecological flows is crucial for water resource sustainability in South America. Policy initiatives and regulatory frameworks aim to conserve biodiversity, maintain ecosystem services, and enhance resilience to human and climatic impacts. Achieving success requires state-of-the-art legal frameworks, accurate scientific data, and collaboration among governments, local communities, and industrial sectors. Ensuring the protection of aquatic ecosystems is fundamental for regional development and human well-being.
