WG 2.4: Acceptance of Nature-based solutions & their implementation in guidelines

Resumo

Climate change is leading to an increase in the magnitude of rare flood events. In Australia, urban design is based on the 1% AEP flood level, which leads to increased risk to population centres located near rivers. The focus is on reducing flood levels to mitigate this risk. There has been a recent emphasis on nature-based solutions for achieving this. This presentation will discuss the various factors affecting risk, and the potential solutions that may be used. The limitations of the solutions are also an important factor needing consideration. Recent flooding in Australia has highlighted the risk from extreme floods and the difficulty in forecasting such events leading to a lack of preparedness in the community and emergency services. This presentation will discuss research currently underway at ANU to address these issues.
