Resumo

Non-Newtonian fluids exhibit non-linear deformation behavior, deviating from the linearity observed in Newton's constitutive equation, as their viscosity varies during deformation. Understanding and modeling this behavior is crucial as non-Newtonian fluids play a significant role in various industries, including construction and food. In this study, we employ the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method to model non-Newtonian fluids by discretizing the fluid domain into a finite number of particles. These particles are updated using the Cauchy momentum equation for fluid flow and a selected rheology model to capture the non-linear viscosity characteristics. The SPH-based non-Newtonian model is then compared to experimental data of a shear-thinning Carbopol gel solution obtained from Sáo (2022) in a dam-break scenario. The results demonstrate good agreement between the SPH model and the experimental data, showcasing the effectiveness of the SPH approach in simulating non-Newtonian fluid behavior.
