Resumo

Morphometric analysis and watershed delineation play an essential role in understanding the dynamics of river systems. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive bibliometric review on the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in delineating drainage areas, focusing on the main topics addressed by researchers in recent decades. The research was conducted through a bibliometric analysis using the Bibliometrix tool from the Scopus library data to identify the leading publications, authors, countries, and emerging trends in determining water contribution areas. A total of 732 papers published between 1978 and 2023 were found from 400 different sources, with annual growth in publications of 6.36%. The five most cited papers in the search address area delimitation, groundwater potential, morphometric analysis, and geographic area definition. The thematic map focused intensely on the United States environmental monitoring and protection and the importance of watershed delineation and digital elevation models. This bibliometric review highlights the importance of geographic analysis, GIS tools, and watershed delineation techniques asan active and constantly growing field.
