Resumo

There is an increasing interest in studies involving public health and water treatment in evaluating the possibility of human intoxication by cyanobacteria, mainly hepatotoxins such as microcystins, and by toxic by-products of water treatment. The objective of this work was to present a preliminary study of the impacts of the use of chlorine in the raw water pretreatment process, as well as the viability of its replacement by potassium permanganate as alternative for the removal of cyanobacteria and reduction of the formation of toxic by-products from the oxidation of organic matter, at Ponto Novo II water treatment plant (WTP), located in the city of Ponto Novo, state of Bahia. Based on the analysis results obtained from the central laboratory of the Bahia Water and Sanitation Company (Embasa) and on the knowledge about the treatment process at Ponto Novo II WTP, it was observed that the pre-chlorination used at the WTP to remove cyanobacteria generates toxic by-products in the process, such as the compounds trihalomethanes (THMs). According to the calculations carried out in this study related to the costs of using chlorine and potassium permanganate as oxidants in the pretreatment of raw water in this WTP, it was verified that the values are close, but the permanganate has a potential for the formation of toxic by-products far inferior to chlorine. The results of this study can contribute to the improvement of water treatment processes in WTPs and of the distributed water quality to the population.
