Resumo
Ground-based hydrological monitoring is paramount for a sustainable water resources management. Many field hydrology studies in Brazil have been developed at the basin scale, but several questions regarding those initiatives remain. How comprehensive are those studies? What are their location? When did the monitoring start? What have we learned from them? To answer these questions, an overview of experimental and representative basins (EBR) across Brazil is presented here, listing their geographical locations, monitored hydrometeorological variables, operational status, monitoring periods and main findings. We identified 60 EBR, spread across most Brazilian biomes, with a monitoring period of ~12 years. In situ hydrological monitoring in Brazil have been contributing to a better understanding of hydrological processes in humid and semi-arid regions, especially about the impacts of land-use change on water quality and quantity. Nonetheless, many findings from these monitoring studies are not fully accessible to the international community.
