Resumo

The sedimentation of a reservoir causes several operational and environmental problems to a power plant undertaker. Sediment control has to be done by bearing in mind implications in different fields. This paper discusses some of the technologies available to protect the soil and the rivers against severe sediment yield by the control of erosive phenomena in the tributary basins, rivers and in the reservoirs themselves. The studies on reservoir sedimentation begin in the preliminary project and linger over the useful life of its exploitation. Some examples of preventive and remedial actions are mentioned, as well as a list of some Brazilian undertakings in which the silting phenomenon is more prominent than any other.
