Resumo

The analysis of environmental fragility is an important tool to study the relationship between the quality of the environment and anthropogenic actions, being directly associated to the vulnerability ofsoil to the erosion processes. Thus, the goals of this work are to analyze and map the environmental fragility of the Lapa Grande State Park (PELG) in Montes Claros, MG, Brazil, and its buffer zone (ZA) and quantify the changes in the vegetation cover before and after the implementationof the PELG. The environmental fragility was evaluated through multicriteria analysis using the following factors: slope, geology, pedology and land use and land cover. It was verified that the central-east and northeast regions of the PELG presented the greatest environmental fragilities in 1996, and significant reductions in the fragility were observed in 2006 and 2016 due to the increase in the vegetation cover after the implementation of the conservation unit, which mitigated the natural fragility of the area. The percentages of the areas in the high and very high fragility classes decreased from 1996 to 2016, and this reduction was more expressive in the park area than in the buffer zone. The results shown the importance of the conservation unit implementation for the environmental fragility improvement, which could mitigate the soil losses by the water erosion process.
