Resumo

Since its foundation, the city of Ponte Nova - MG (Brazil) has suffered damages from flooding. May be mentioned the main flood events, by the intensity of the damages to the city, the floods of 1951, 1979, 1997, 2001, 2008 and 2012, the penultimate being the largest. Mapping the flood plains of a city is an essential tool for ordering the land use and occupation and the direction of urban growth. In addition, it facilitates the elaboration of a Civil Defense Plan laying down measures to minimize losses during the floods. A good mapping requires several data, such as topo-bathymetric surveys, previous flood levels, hydraulic study of the flow stream, study of probability of the rains and floods, among others. However, the lack of consistent database, mainly the lack of topographic surveys in most Brazilian cities, difficult the obtainment of accurate results. This article presents partial results from a study which aimed to develop an alternative simplified methodology for the elaboration of mapping the floodplain to the city of Ponte Nova in a quickly and low cost way through the use of Geographic Information System (GIS), highlighting its limitations.
