Resumo

Coastal lagoons are transitional environments thatoftenfunction as theoutlet of ariver basin, receivingfreshwater and sediments discharges, while renewing its waters through a connection to the sea. Changes in the morphology of lagoons caused by sediment deposition can cause changes in thewaterrenewal efficiency. In this study we investigated how the siltation affected the residence time in the Mundaú lagoon in a critical flow scenario, comparing two bathymetrieswith 27 years of difference, through aLagrangian method of particle tracking coupled to a hydrodynamic model. Spatially, residence time has declined considerably in regions where there has been a significant loss of depth. Due to the decrease in the volume of storage caused by silting, a greater number of particles were able to leave the lagoon, indicating an improvement in the renewal of the waters.
