Resumo

In search of adequate planning and management of water resources, forecasting and infrastructure systems are needed, supported by relatively complex hydrological-hydrodynamic erosion and sediment transportmodels. These in turn require physical data from the river basins such as parameters of the river channel. Generally these can be obtained through geomorphological relationships, but with limitations in some places of variable geometry along the rivers. Thus, the present study proposes the use images from remote sensing in non-flooded periods to evaluate an extremely simple methodology to obtain widths along rivers using GIS software. The case study used to evaluate the methodology was the Piquiri river, located in the state of Paraná. The proposed method is based on the simplification of the form of the rivers considering them "sinuous rectangles". In this way they could be represented by only two measures: length and width. Thus the width of the same could be obtained through its surface area divided by the length. The results of the application of this methodology in the studied section showed that this approach is able to provide extremely satisfactory measurements of width along rivers and its application is very simple to be carried out with conventional tools present in GIS software
