Resumo

Erosive processes occurring in watersheds can carry sediments containing nutrients, heavy metals and contaminants of organic and inorganic origin into the receiving water body, thus damaging the local ecosystem, in addition to the population that benefits from this water source. Thus, to better understand the origin of the sediment sources, and decision-making for the establishment of mitigation measures, the use of the sediment fingerprinting technique has been highlighted. For this purpose, the distribution of n-alkanes as a tracer was used because it was present in the epicuticular wax of the plants, thus labeling the present soil, thus being insoluble and resistant to degradation. Thus, the present work aims to evaluate the distribution of n-alkanes in the soil and sediments in order to identify the source of the organic material. The study area is located in the municipality of Rio Negrinho -Brazil. Soil samples were collected by use and occupation, bottom sediment, and suspended sediment for sampling periods. The extractions of n-alkanes for the soil and sediment samples were grown in DCM: MeOH solution 2:1 (v/v). The concentrations of n-alkanes extracted from the samples were quantified in GC/MS. The results were analyzed through indexes and ratios (CPI, ACL, OEP, Paq, Pwaxand HVI). The concentrations of n-alkanes that were extracted from the sediments and compared to the concentrations present in the soil, denoted as source of terrigenous plants, through the ratios and indices.
